Common Questions
NJROTC is not the military. NJROTC — Naval Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps — is a program developed by the U.S. Navy and offered in high schools across the country. It's a leadership and citizenship program, not a military enlistment. Cadets learn naval science, physical fitness, drill, and leadership skills.
NJROTC is a class during the school day, so the base commitment is just showing up to class. Specialist sections like Drill, Color Guard, and Drone meet additionally for practice — typically after school. Competition season adds weekend commitments. The more involved you get, the more time it takes — and the more you get out of it.
No. NJROTC is not a military recruitment program, and there is absolutely no obligation to join the military after participating. The program is focused on leadership, citizenship, and personal growth. Many cadets go on to college or other careers, and participation in NJROTC can be a valuable experience no matter your future plans.
